English

English is extremely important at Anglesey. It is taught daily and is also a feature of many other lessons across the curriculum. We ensure that speaking and listening, reading and writing are taught from the earliest stages and we ensure that all children gain mastery of phonics to help them read and write.
English will often be linked to other things that are being taught so that children learn to apply their skills in real contexts. We are part of the Talk4Write project as part of the Academies Enterprise Trust and use innovative methods to deliver writing and literacy skills across the school.

Reading is really important to us at Anglesey, and we encourage out children to read every day, both in school and at home. During daily lessons, children read to a range of adults and love to be able to discuss their books with us. We also encourage children to take books home, from their reading lessons and also from the school library, and read to adults at home for at least 10 minutes every day. Our children have a reading diary that is full of useful advice, and children love it when parents and adults at home make a comment about their reading in the books for teachers to read. This can be a comment about how well the child has read, and which questions adults have asked their children after reading, as this is one of the best ways that children can improve their reading skills.

We believe that learning should be a journey for all our children, and work closely together as a team to ensure that learning progresses from EYFS to Y6. We have devised an overview of Reading skills and strategies, Writing skills, Punctuation, Grammar and Handwriting expectations that we use to ensure that all pupils at Anglesey are exposed to a rich, varied and challenging curriculum.

At Anglesey, we also love inviting our parents into school for workshops and information meetings. The latest workshop that we ran for parents was before half term and focused on phonics, spelling and reading in KS1. The parents that came really enjoyed it, and picked up lots of great tips for reading and learning sounds with their children at home.

KS1 Parent Workshop

The workshop held in the ICT Suite on Thursday 26th February was a great success, and the parents who came learned lots about how to help with reading at home, and how to navigate our Bug Club books.

Follow this link and ask your child for their username and password to get started! If you do not know your child's username and password, please feel free to ask their class teacher.

The next workshop will be taking place in the Summer Term, so please keep your eyes peeled on the newsletters and on this page for updates.
